Malagamuwa sets new course record
MOTOR RACING: The Merdeka 12 hour endurance race at Sepang F1 Circuit
in Malaysia was held over the week end. Sri Lankan driver Dilantha
Malagamuwa who joined Singpore team to drive for the Team Porsche Club
Singapore.
He was in association with the other two members Mok Weng Sun and
Ringo Chong to drive Porsche 997RSR.
Dilantha who has not driven the same model tested the car two days
prior to the race and was confident. Out of 105 entries and only 77 cars
were allowed to the grid.
On the previous day Dilantha recorded the fastest time and helpee his
team to occupy the pole position which had the advantage. Dilanthas
time being 2.07:4 also was enough to set a new course record.
The other two team mates Weng and Ringo both did god timings 2.11 and
2.10. Though many world class drivers and ex Formula 1 Drivers were in
action none could beat Dilanthas. Australias Craig Baird one of the
fastest drivers in Australia and
current the Porsche Carrera Cup leader did the second fastest lap
2.08.5.
For four long hours the Singapore team were moving smoothly occupying
the second position, but tragedy struck when technical problems arising.
To rectify this they were in the pit for four hours but could not put
things in order and to complete the remaining four hours using only few
gears.
Though Weng and Ringo drove we could not finish the event in great
style and finished 38 in the overall standings and 4th in the particular
class.
It was an amazing experience to see the support extended by the
Singaporeans.
The Team Porsche Club Singapore is to compete at the Dubai 24 Hour
endurance race in January and few more endurance races next year.
