CMC motion to retain legal counsel passed

COLOMBO: A motion to permit the Colombo Municipal Council to retain a legal counsel for its defence and for making payment for such services was adopted at a special meeting of the CMC yesterday.

The Motion was presented in terms of Section 40 (1)(k) of the Municipal Council Ordinance.

The motion was passed by a majority of 17 votes with 28 councillors voting for and 11 against. There was a split in the vote among members of the Spectacle group which has control of the CMC.

CMC Opposition Leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara voted against the motion saying that it contravened the CMC statute.

Names of the Lawyers proposed by the CMC Mayor Mohamed Imthiyas were Kalinga Indatissa, Shiraz Noordeen and Rohana Muthumala.
