Sportsman passes away

DEATH: Top sportsman from Kandy G.A. Shirley Gunasinghe passed away on Sunday.

He was popularly known as GAS is a product of Dharmaraja College who represented the school in cricket, soccer, athletics, tennis and hockey. He excelled as a fast bowler and was selected as the Best Bowler in the Nuwara Eliya district when he represented TRI, Talawakelle.

Shirley’s school days contemporaries were Sonny Yatawara, Alwis brothers, Victor Kodagoda, T.S. Marasinghe and Chandra de Silva to name a few.

He is the brother of Empire Games boxer Sarath Gunasinghe of Air Force and the late Derrick Gunasinghe, former national boxing coach.

The funeral will be held today at 4.00 p.m. at Mahaiyawa Cemetery, Kandy.
