Nineteen new records set up at Uva Province meet

ATHLETICS: Nineteen new meet records were set up at the Uva Province Inter-schools Track & Field Meet which concluded at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla on Wednesday.

Well over two thousand athletes from around 800 schools in Uva participated at this meet which was organised by the Ministry of Education and conducted for the past two weeks.

Dharmapala Maha Vidyalaya from Bandarawela won the Individual Schools Championship with 103 points followed by Welimada Central College with 91 points.

Bandarawela Circuit won the overall championships with 354 points while Wellawaya Circuit with 262 points was placed second at this meet where the Uva Province Chief Minister Gamini Wijith Wijemuni Soysa was the chief guest and distributed the awards.

J. A. Chandana Kumara of Devananda MMV Welimada won the Best Athlete award for Boys for his record breaking run in the boys 800 meters where he clocked 1 mt. 57.6 sec. and also won the 400 meters and 400 meters hurdles.

P. K. A. Ayesha Maduwanthi of Sevanagala MV Wellawaya won the Best Athlete award for Girls when she set a new record in the under 19 Discus Throw with a distance of 34.74 mts.

She also won the Under 19 girls 100 meters.
