Four new meet records established

50th Junior National Athletic Championships:

ATHLETICS: Four more new meets records were set up on the final day of the 50th Junior National Athletic Championships at Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

The first record for the day was established by Dewni Madurapperuma of Musaeus College, Colombo when she heaved the putt to a distance of 11.54m in the under 18 age group. Dewni who held the record at 10.92 last year improved heavily this year.

The second record established was in the Boys under 16 High Jump when K. K. N. Nirmal Kumara of Christ Church National school went over the far at 1.91m. Gateway College’s R. Nishad Perera too did well finish behind Nirmal clearing 1.83m.

P. A. I. Madushani, Anuradhapura Ratnayake Central College was responsible for the third record to be lowered when she clocked 57.45 secs for the Girls under 18, 400m. She was followed by Kurukula Vidyalaya’s Mihirani Perera (57.46) and Sashiprabha Jayasinghe of St. Joseph’s BMV, Kegalle (57.87).

The final record for the day was lowered by Badulla District Athletic Association’s Shiran Kanchana in the 1500m for under 18 Boys. Kanchana clocked a time of 4.07.57 secs.

Sri Lanka Army dominated the 100 meters for under 23. Army’s M. S. M. Sufran (10.90), N. P. Dharmaratne (11.05) and Janith Thushara (11.15) finishing the event first. In the same age category M. K. G. C. Priyankara and Sujith Kumara from Army ended as first and second in the 1500 meters.

The 50th Junior Nationals was sponsored by Dialog Telekom. Records were set up in the following events.

Shot Putt Girls U-18

1. Dewni Madurapperuma (Musaeus College) 11.54m., 2. W. T. Kumudumali Fernando (Good Shepherd Conv.) 11.26m., 3. Chamari Kumari (Sumana Balika Vid. Ratnapura) 9.53m.

High Jump - Boys U-16

1. K. K. N. Nirmal Kumara (Christ Church National School) 1.91m., 2. R. Nishad Perera (Gateway College) 1.83m, 3. Thanuka Perera (Maris Stella College) 1.77m.

400m Girls Under-18

1. P. A. I. Madushani (Ratnayake Central College, A’pura) 57.45, 2. R. M. N. Mihirani Perera (Gurukula Vidyalaya) 57.46, 3. J. A. N. Shashiprabha Jayasinghe (St. Joseph’s College, Kegalle) 57.87.

1500m Boys U-18

1. W. G. Shiran Kanchana (Badulla DAA) 4.07.57, 2. W. M. J. E. Weerasinghe (Ratnayake Central College, A’pura) 4.12.97, 3. A. B. Sanjeeva Udayangana (Rahula College, Matara) 4.13.36.

N. Vyrawanathan Challenge Trophy

Best Athlete Boys Under 16 - K. K. N. Nirmal Kumara (Christ Church College, Matale) High Jump 1.91m.

N. A. Q. N. C. Kurera Challenge Trophy

Best Athlete Girls under 16 - Danushki Perera (Ladies College, Colombo) 200m 26.19 secs.

Susanthika Jayasinghe Challenge Trophy

Best Athlete Boys under 18 - S. D. U. A. Dikmadugoda (Anuradhapura Central College) and Shehan Ambepitiya (Gateway College, Colombo) 110 m hurdles 14.65 secs & 100 m 10.77 secs respectively.

Sugath Thilakaratna Challenge Trophy

Best Athlete Girls under 18 - J. A . N. Shashipraba Jayasinghe (St. Joseph Balika V, Kegalle) 200m 25.30 secs.

D Stanly Tabrew Memorial Challenge Trophy

Best Athlete Boys under 20 - Sajith Nadeeshan (Maris Stella College, Negombo) 110 m hurdles 14.75 secs.

Deshabandu Lt. Col. W. Wimaladasa Challenge Trophy

Best Athlete Girls under 20 - Siroshini Paranavithana (Ladies College, Colombo) 200 m event, 25.19 secs.

Dialog Challenge Trophy

Best Athlete women under-23 - R. N. Chandrika Subashini (Senanayake MMV, Madampe) 400m event 55.54 secs.

Dialog Challenge Trophy

Best Athlete men under 23 - M. H. N. Dharmaratne (Sri Lanka Army) Long jump event 7.40m.
