IP, PC jailed for torture

COLOMBO: Colombo High Court Judge Upali Abeyratne yesterday sentenced
an Inspector of Police and a Police Constable to seven years rigorous
imprisonment after they were convicted of treating a woman in Police
custody inhumanly and cruelly.
The High Court convicted Inspector of Police Shelton Saley and Police
Constable W. S. Stanley Thisera for treating Anjalin Roshana Michael
cruelly and inhumanly at Narahenpita. She was taken into custody on
December 3, 2000.
According to evidence Anjalin was the house assistant of Mali
Chamithree Seneviratne, an Attorney-at-Law.
Anjalin had been arrested by the Police with regard to a wrist-watch
theft at Seneviratne’s house.
The wrist-watch was worth of Rs. 500,000 in 2000. According to
Anjalin she had been treated inhumanely by the Police.
The Court observed the case was proved beyond reasonable doubt. The
Court also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on each convict and another one
year RI in default. State Counsel Jude Nanayakkara appeared for the
prosecution. |
