ICS Lanka branch to celebrate 20th Anniversary

CELEBRATION: The Sri Lanka Branch of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary on August 7th and 8th at the Trans Asia Hotel.

To commemorate the event they would be hosting a conference on the title “Sri Lanka Moving Towards A Mega Maritime Hub.”

A key presenter at the conference will be the Director of the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) and the Director of the ICC Commercial Crime Services P. Mukundan. He will speak on the subject “Avoiding the Hazards of Maritime Fraud.”

The latest experiences in maritime fraud and how they affect the development of shipping, steps that are necessary to counter these evils and how effective they are in controlling the risk are some of the areas that would be covered during this presentation.

Mukundan served on board merchant vessels for approximately ten years, before he decided that vessels were spending far less time in port to make a sea career attractive. He came ashore in 1976 to the United Kingdom in search of the soft option - a University degree.

Unable to give up the life he had become accustomed to, he managed to get into the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme at the Cranfield School of Management in the United Kingdom in 1980.

Much to his surprise, he found that there was no easy way around the MBA course and after a stint of enforced hard labour, successfully completed the course in September, 1981.

Branch was formed at the CSC as it was the CSC who was instrumental in getting their young staff trainees to qualify in the shipping by insisting for ICS UK Qualification. CSC was the breeding ground for Shipping professionals.

From a humble beginning the branch has grown to have 30 Fellows, 60 Members and 200 student population and ICS Sri Lanka’s vision is to be the leader in providing quality professionals to the entire region thereby making Sri Lanka richer in HR.

ICS Qualification is the highest professional qualification in the world dealing with all aspect of shipping and it is equivalent to a British Hons Degree (2nd Class).
