Sub-committee to study impact of fuel price hike

COLOMBO: A ministerial sub-committee has been appointed to study the effects of fuel price increase in the world market on the local power generation and accordingly make recommendations, a Power and Energy Ministry official said.

The committee comprised Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickremanayake and Ministers A.H.M. Fowzie, Sarath Amunugama, Kumara Welgama and Champika Ranawaka. The appointment was a sequel to a Cabinet Memorandum by Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Senevirathne.

According to the Ministry official, the CEB was in dire economical situation subsequent to the price increase. Before the increase the CEB sold a unit of electricity to consumers at a subsidised rate of Rs. 10.80 incurring a loss of Rs. 2 per each unit.
