Speedy probe into killing of Red Cross workers

COLOMBO: President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday reiterated that a speedy and impartial investigation would be conducted into the killing of two Red Cross volunteers.

President Rajapaksa made this assurance when he met Red Cross officials.

Earlier on Sunday, the President ordered a full-scale and immediate inquiry into the deaths of the two persons whose bodies were recovered from Kiriella with gun shot wounds. Sinnarasa Shanmugalingam (32) and Karthekesu Chandramohan (26) had worked for the Red Cross Batticaloa branch.

Presidential Secretariat sources said that although an attempt has been made to hold Government authorities responsible for the alleged abduction and killing of the two Red Cross volunteers, it was evident there was no involvement on the part of police or security personnel.
