CH in smashing 53-3 win over Old Zahirians

RUGBY: CH and FC, playing sans several regulars, kept their unbeaten record intact with a smashing 53 points (four goals, five tries) to 3 (one penalty) win over Old Zahirians in their Caltex 'A' Division league rugby match played at Havelock Park yesterday after leading 27-3 at 'lemons'.

The lads from Maitland Crescent won a large share of possession with hooker Achala Perera striking a shade faster then his vis-a-vis Deen in the set scrums and the trio of Sanjeewa, Ruwanthilleke and Malewana holding sway in the line outs.

However, they could not make maximum use of the good ball which came their way as some resolute tackling by the Old Zahirians especially fly half Saldin and centres Mannan and Zubaideen prevented CH from winning this game by a much bigger margin.

CH surged into the lead when they won a line out in the Old Zahirians 25 and set the three quarters in motion and centre Jimmy Bolakoro drew the defence and slipped out a pass to winger S. Dahanayake who scored by the right corner flag.

Dinuk de S. Wijeyaratne missed the conversion. Four minutes later, off a loose maul in the Old Zahirians '25' CH worked their three quarters and winger Rukshan Wijesinghe fell over for an unconverted try mid left.

In the 25th minute off a three quarter move in mid field CH's Fijian centre Jimmy Bolakoro made a break and slipped out a pass to flanker Dilanka Wijesekera who sent winger Rukshan Wijesinghe to score by the left corner flag.

Roy Nishantha missed the conversion (CH 15-0). Five minutes later, centre Dinuk de S. Wijeyaratne made a break in mid field and sent out a pass to fly half Dinuka Jayasinghe who scored under the posts and converted it himself to make it 22-0.

In the 33rd minute, Old Zahirians reduced the deficit when centre Rizwan Mannan fired across a 25 metre penalty. Just before the breather CH increased their lead when prop forward Damith Perera barged through to touch down by the right corner flag off a 10 metre line out. Roy Nishantha missed the conversion and CH led 27-3 at half time.

In the 13th minute after resumption off a second phase move in the Old Zahirians '25' CH's Dinuk de S. Wijeyaratne sliced through the opponents defence and scored under the posts. Matheesha de Silva added the extra points to make it 34-3. Nine minutes later, off a line out in the OZSC '25' CH set the three quarters in motion and full back Matheesha de Silva scored mid left. Sajith Bandara converted (CH 41-3).

The lads from Maitland Crescent scored two more tries through substitute prop forward Kasun Kaluarachchi and No 8 Sumedha Malewana with fly half Sajith Bandara converting one of them to make it 53-3 at the final whistle.
