Rampaging drug addict kills two, injures four

KANDY: A drug addict went berserk hacking to death two persons while injuring four others, one of them critically, before being apprehended by Police in Pallekele, Kandy on Sunday night.

According to Kandy ASP C. Karunaratne the suspect Devaraj Jayakumar, 25, in a drug induced frenzy had attacked his victims with two sharp knives.

The incident took place around 8.30 p.m. Two of the victims succumbed to injuries at the Kandy hospital while four others who were injured were admitted to Peradeniya hospital, one of them in a critical condition, ASP Karunaratne said.

The victims have been identified as Sunil Galappaththy, 48, and Jesu Sithappan, 53. Balagolla OIC M.D. Chandrapala said he received a call around 8 p.m that a person was attacking people with knives in the Pallekelle area and rushed to the scene where he saw the suspect holding a bloodstained knife.

He had attacked people at random in a demented fashion apparently acting under the influence of drugs. The suspect was taken into custody, he added. The suspect also damaged a parked bus. Balagolla police are investigating.
