Thara to boost handloom industry

KATUBEDDA: Sri Lanka’s handloom industry is to receive a fillip with the introduction of a highly productive handloom machinery called Thara that would improve the quality and volume of handloom manufactures, Textile Industry Development Minister Jayatissa Ranaweera said at the Textile Complex in Katubedda recently.

The Minister was speaking at a ceremony to hand over 10 Thara machines to Provincial Council Textile Ministries.

“The technology has been successfully used in the handloom textile industry in India with a quality output,” the Minister said.

Ranaweera said the Government has given priority to develop the sector while taking steps to popularise this technology to benefit the local handloom industry.
