Indecent proposal from bogus romeo
COLOMBO: The Colombo Fraud Bureau has arrested a 53-year-old
married man who placed a marriage proposal in a newspaper and duped his
would-be ‘wife’ to the tune of Rs.650,000.
He was remanded till May 22 by District Judge and Colombo Fort
Magistrate Namal Bandara Balalla.
According to Fraud Bureau IP R.S. Rupasinghe, the man had advertised
for partners who would prefer to go abroad. After corresponding with a
woman from Dodangoda who gave her nod to the proposal, he had asked for
funds totalling Rs.650,000 for visa expenses.
The woman has become suspicious after paying him Rs.400,000 and
complained to the Fraud Bureau.
Its sleuths nabbed the suspect as he was preparing to accept more
money from the woman.
At the time of arrest, he had letters from several women in his
possession. Police appeal to those defrauded by the suspect to come
forward.
Investigations are being conducted by a team led by Fraud Bureau
Director SSP H. Pinidiya. |
