Sam Gunaratne in the lead

GOLF: Victoria Golf and Country Resort launched the new medal series for 2007 following on from the successful 2006 Victoria Medal Series, the club has further by adding to the excitement by awarding points on an order of Merit basis.

Sam Gunaratne leads the Current Order of Merit in the Nett Division I with 15 points, followed by Englishman Ian Tait with 13 points at the conclusion of the fourth round schoolboy Chamil Wickremasinghe is lying third with 12 points. Veteran Carl Kelaart leads Division 2 with 36 points and Sirath Kasthuriratne is second with 31 points/Regular player Tony Witham occupies the third place with 24 points.

The Ladies Order of Merit is led by Royal Colombo Golf Club player Roshini Sangari with an aggregate of 29 points after 4 rounds and Pauline Morley in second place with 24 points. Aida Andrea with 19 points is in third position.

General Manager of the VGCR British Golf Professional Mike Varney said that "The revised format of the 2007 order of Merit is very similar to the way a Tournament Professional gets money on tour - it is all to do with the player's position in the field and the strength of the field. If one of our players wins their division in the medal against 50 other golfers they will be awarded 50 points. Second place gets 49 points right the way down to last place getting on points.

If the same player wins a Medal with only 30 players then he gets 30 points and so on. It is the best way to find out who are our most consistent players.
