ANIMAL RIGHTS: Gaining a degree in biology from an American
university, she dreamt of herself as a veterinary surgeon but life
opened up a new door for her. Today she has emerged as a dynamic
businesswoman and runs the most fashionable department store in town.
Chief Executive Officer of Odel, Otara Gunewardene went onto reveal
the mysteries in the fashion world at her mall.
Beginning in a little room on Fife Road in 1988 over the years Odel
has captured the hearts of many.

However a spark of Otara’s dream remains in her and her love for
animals reflects in her business. ‘Embark’ the dog sterilisation project
that was launched recently confirms her dedication towards the
betterment of animals. ‘Embark’ is aimed at educating and creating
awareness of many animal related issues that are often neglected.
“From the very first day Odel contributed for wildlife and
environment. It is nothing new. We have been doing CSR projects in
various ways but I felt that it was time to pick one and focus on it.
Meanwhile we will be continuing other projects as well,” she said.
“This project won’t be restricted to dogs. Stray dogs were a major
problem and required attention. We will work with those who are involved
in other animal projects. We will raise funds with them. The second
phase will commence related to dogs and cats,” she explained.
Her work has been recognised by many. The Federation of Chambers of
Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) awarded her the Sri Lankan
Entrepreneur of the Year 2000. Looking back, she says that she is happy
with everything she achieved.
“Each year it has been significant. I did not plan anything but each
step was significant. I may be the driving force behind success but
every one supported me. I share my achievements and joy with them,”
Otara said.

“Achieving something is more to do with having the capability and the
focus.
It is not gender based. Women in Sri Lankan society can go far. It is
not easy. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication. You should also
have the character to cope with the amount of work. If you start a
business with that idea there will be no barriers.
It is giving the right thing at the right time. You have to market
your products properly. It has the same challenges,” she explained.
“My parents inspired me. My whole family is focused. It is not just
one person that has inspired me. A lot of people who have achieved a lot
out of nothing impressed me,” she said.
Fame does not affect Otara in her work instead she handles fame and
people with ease. “People have been really nice. It is enjoyable to
interact with people and hear their comments. I have a busy schedule and
it keeps me away from attending social events and functions. I am very
much restricted with time,” she added.
“At present I am working on the expansion of Odel. It is a big
project. There are minor details that you have to look into. It is
difficult and at the same time interesting.
I want to do something unique and different. The saree bar we opened
recently was well received by the people. I am planning to make some
changes in the current store also,” Otara said of her future plans for
Odel. |
