West Indies trounce B’desh by 99 runs

WORLD CUP: West Indies trounced Bangladesh by 99 runs in the
22nd Super Eight match on Thursday in Kingston Ovel, Bridgetown.
Bangladesh chasing a target of 231 runs was bowled out for 131 in
43.5 overs.
Powel was the most successful bowler for West Indies capturing 3 for
38. Colleymore who had an early break through into the Bangladeshi
batting taking 2/11 made the inroads for Windies victory. Chris Gayle
and Dwayne Bravo too made good use of the wicket to end with two wickets
each.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul was also came up with a timely half century
which came off in 85 balls.
Ramnaresh Sarwan was adjudged the Man of the Match for his brilliant
knock of 91 which boosted the Windies score to a winning position.
Put into bat by Bangladesh, West Indies huffed and puffed to make 230
for 5 in their Super 8 match of the World Cup 2007.
Hosts West Indies and Bangladesh are out of the running for the World
Cup and they were just honouring their fixtures.
The wicket was favourable to the fast men, giving them good bounce
and movement and the early West Indian batsmen failed to come to terms
with the moving ball and they lost openers Devon Smith 5 and Cris Gayle
for one with the score on 8.
Although they finally made 230 in 50, it was always a struggle for
the batsmen and although Shiv Chanderpaul made 50 in 84 balls with 3
fours and captain in waiting Ramnaresh Sarwan made an unbeaten 91, the
Windies batsmen had to labour for runs.
Chanderpaul and Sarwan added 81 for the third wicket to improve the
situation for the home team.
Sarwan was once again in the runs and his innings was a priceless one
and took the score to respectability.
When Brian Lara walked in to bat he was given a thunderous welcome
and although he did not play a big innings, he lashed out to make 33 in
26 balls with 2 sixes and one four.
Sarwan in his fifty had 4 fours and one six in 57 balls. This is the
second time that he failed to make three figure score. Earlier he made
another 90 odd against the South Africans.
