Attoney General Kamalasabeyson retires

COLOMBO: President’s Counsel Kandapper Chinniah Kamalasabeyson
yesterday retired from the post of Attorney General after serving the
Attorney General’s Department for the last thirty-three years.
President’s Counsel Kamalasabeyson born on April 8, 1949 in
Trincomalee passed the final examination for the admission of Advocates
with honours and was enrolled as an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Sri
Lanka on June 23, 1972.
President’s Counsel Kamalasabeyson was appointed as a President’s
Counsel in 1996. This is an honour conferred by the President on an
Attorney-at-Law who has reached eminence in the profession and
maintained high standards of conduct and professional rectitude.
Outgoing Attorney General joined the Attorney General’s Department in
August 1974 and had served in the Department as a State Counsel, Senior
State Counsel, Deputy Solicitor General, Additional Solicitor General
and Solicitor General. He has Appointed as the Attorney General in
October 1999 and continued to hold the office till yesterday.
As the Attorney General, President’s Counsel Kamalasabeyson had
appeared on behalf of the State in several important cases in
Constitutional, Human Rights, Public Law and Commercial Law, many of
which are regarded as landmark cases in Sri Lanka. He has also appeared
in important extradition cases both in the original and the appellate
courts.
He has Represented the Government of Sri Lanka in several
International Arbitrations, both in Sri Lanka and in foreign
jurisdictions. Negotiated International Commercial Contracts including
privatisation agreements and extradition treaties. The US Government
commended for the skilful negotiation of the US-Sri Lanka Extradition
Treaty. |
