Continuous food supplies to North

COLOMBO: There is no food scarcity in the North and East as some try to make out, as the Essential Services Commissioner General’s Office has taken all steps to ensure a continuous food supply, Essential Services Commissioner General S. B. Divaratne said.

Divaratne said responding to the Government invitation, the private sector has come forward to assist in the supplying of food to residents in Jaffna and they have also been given two ships to take all essential items to the North and East.

He added that steps have been taken to ensure a continuous flow of food and essential items to residents of these areas and they expect to get ship loads of food and other essential items from India.

“As the Government and the private sector operate closely in providing food and other goods, it is a myth to say that there is a food scarcity in the North,” the Commissioner General said.
