NEHRP to build 2500 houses

Batticaloa: A housing Reconstruction programme is taking place in Batticaloa to reconstruct the houses damaged by the conflict under North-East Housing Reconstruction Project (NEHRP).

This has to take place in 50 villages selected in the basic of priority. Applications have received for selecting the beneficiaries from these villages and now computer data processing is going on. Steps are afoot to release the first phase payment in the first week of April.

2525 houses were reconstructed last year in Phase II in the Batticaloa District by this Housing project. It is notable that the selected beneficiaries built their house according to the instructions given even though the prices of construction material are high.

In this year too, a payment of Rs. 2,50,000 has to be paid to the beneficiaries who will be selected from Batticaloa. However, it is expected that the beneficiaries will have to expend more money for bricks due to the price escalation of construction materials.

For avoiding this, the public people and brick makers of cleared areas are required to increase brick production. It is notable that 25 million bricks are necessary for Housing Reconstruction Programme in Batticaloa only.
