India thanked for training provided to Sri Lankan Armed forces
FM calls on Indian Defence Minister:
INDIA: Foreign Affairs Minister Rohitha Bogollagama met Indian
Defence Minister A. K. Antony during his recent visit to India.
The meeting on March 20, was the first between the two Ministers
after Bogollagama assumed his current portfolio.
The two Ministers discussed in detail the situation in Sri Lanka,
particularly possible measures to be taken by both India and Sri Lanka
to ensure the security of fishermen on both sides and curb the illegal
trafficking in weapons and explosives.
The Minister referring to recent reports of alleged involvement of
the Sri Lanka Navy on attacks on Indian fishermen, informed the Indian
Minister that the reports were baseless.
It was also mentioned that in the past, parties with vested interests
have been known to instigate such incidents with ulterior motives.
Both Ministers agreed that the relations between India and Sri Lanka
remained distinct and unique.
Bogallagama emphasised President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the
Government’s commitment to strengthen this relationship.
The visiting Minister thanked the Indian Defence Minister for the
valuable training provided to members of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces.
Antony assured India’s continued support and assistance to safeguard
the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sri Lanka.
Bogollagama invited Antony to visit Sri Lanka at a mutually
convenient date. |
