EDUCATION: Rev. Dr. Stanley Abeysekera, the former Rector of St.
Joseph's College, Colombo who was the Chief Guest at the 11th
anniversary celebrations of St. Joseph's College (SJC) branch school
Enderamulla said that there is a very heavy responsibility on teachers
on the subject of attitude development in students.
"Students take an example from the manner in which the teacher enters
the school, classroom his or her form of address and general behaviour.
If honesty, justice, fairplay, kindness and unselfishness can be
installed in them, it is certain that a bright student population would
be generated to the world," Re. Fr. Abeysekera said.
"In an age where lives through cheating and dishonesty and where
human values have deteriorated to very low levels and in a world filled
with selfishness, this school has been started in order to generate a
good honest population.
As such it is necessary to adorn one's own self with the good
qualities of love, justice, kindness and honesty as the proud
achievements will be reflected not only on you as students, but also
your teachers and parents," said Rev. Father Abeysekera in his address.
The principal of the school Rev. Dr. Anthony Fernandopulle said this
school which started in a very humble way in 1996 has moved forward
successfully for 11 years and we thank God, Almighty Father for it.
The principal said that today's special guest Fr. Stanley Abeysekera
was instrumental in planting the seed of the branch school, during the
time he was the Rector of the mother school at Colombo and today we
thank Fr. Abeysekera at a time when the harvest is being reaped.
He further thanked His Grace the Archbishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis
who strongly supported the branch school establishment and Rev. Fr.
Victor Silva and Rev. Fr. Sudath Gunathilaka who worked for the welfare
of the school.
He also thanked Rev. Fr. Sylvester Ranasinghe the Rector of St.
Joseph's College for this continued help and Kapila Seneviratne and his
family for donating the land for the school. He specially thanked the
former principal Mrs. Bernie Perera for her tireless efforts in bringing
the school to the present state.
A large gathering including members of the school development
society, special invitees and many parents and well-wishers attended the
function.
