The LTTE's true intentions

While the State is going the extra mile to raise awareness in the world on what it has been doing by way of fair means to defuse the conflict in Sri Lanka, all that the LTTE is doing is beefing-up its military muscle with the aim of heightening Lanka's strife and agony.

This is evident from the frequency with which the Navy has been expertly demobilizing and destroying LTTE vessels carrying heavy arms shipments to Sri Lanka.

The latest in this series of superb demolition jobs by the Navy came on Sunday when two such shipments were blasted in the seas off Arugam Bay.

The two strikes by the Navy brought to three the number of such LTTE arms shipments which were wrecked and put out of action over the past three weeks.

Before we go any further, we need to see here the superior combat capability of the Armed Forces. Their expert demolition jobs on our seas explode for good the myth concerning the LTTE's fighting prowess. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The LTTE has never been a match for the Security Forces.

It is simply that their fighting capability was blown out of proportion by LTTE supporters and some sections of the media. Now we know for a fact that the LTTE is no match for the Armed Forces.

Besides, the Armed Forces are coming under the correct leadership and guidance under President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Army Commander Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka. Needless to say, these leaders have instilled in the Security Forces unprecedented morale and confidence.

Coming back to the developments in the North-East, it is all too obvious that the Tigers are brazenly scoffing at the world community by deliberately and uncaringly going ahead with their arms procurements and shipments.

This is also proof that the international community is yet to clamp down effectively on the LTTE's anti-Lanka operations abroad.

It is high time the world acted in concert to end these sinister operations of the LTTE. Here is clear proof that the Tigers are not at all inclined to cooperate in bringing peace.

We hope the world would now draw the correct inferences and act.

Missing link between university education and economic growth

Until 1960s, universities in Sri Lanka had earned the reputation of centres of excellence in arts, culture, and sciences. Now these universities are still centers, but certainly not of excellence. ccording to development economists, investments on knowledge and human capital stimulate the economic growth. But they did not explain how and why knowledge spillover takes place.

The Sinhala terminology 'Aabadhitha' used to identify the disabled people, also imparts the feeling that often these are sick or feeble people. These perceptions make some in society believe that to survive, 'disabled' people need sympathy and charity based support.
