Children should be protected from unruly elements - SP Governor
Raja WAIDYASEKERA, Tissamaharama special corr.
TISSAMAHARAMA: Children are an asset to a nation. They should
be protected from unruly elements, said Southern Province Governor
Kumari Balasooriya.
The Governor was addressing the prefects and the students who
excelled in Year V scholarship examination at the Tangalle model primary
school.
She said the parents shoulder great responsibility moulding the lives
and characters of the children. The Principal and teachers on the other
hand bear the responsibility of giving the children the education they
desire with dedication and care.
The Governor said, teaching is a noble profession as such it was the
bounden duty of the teachers and principals to safeguard it.
She said, there is a section of teachers who engage themselves in
plundering money of the parents by conducting tuition classes. The
teachers in this noble profession should not fall into such lower
depths.
The Governor said, teachers of this school have set an example to
others by teaching the Year V scholarship students free after school
hours. This example must be followed by all the principals and teachers
in the Island.
She said the teacher shortage in certain parts of the country is
hampering the education activities.
There is an excess of 1,000 teachers in Galle district and excess of
400 in Matara district, while there is an acute shortage of teachers in
other districts.
Remedied measures should he adopted to remedy this situation. I in my
capacity as the Governor has tried to decentralise the teacher
