COLOMBO: Head of the People’s Action for Free and Elections (PAFFREL)
Kingsley Rodrigo noted that a deliberate attempt was underway by certain
political parties and groups to tarnish the Government’s image charging
it with human rights violations ahead of the Geneva confab.
He said the modus operandi of these elements was to accuse the
Government for incidents of abductions, disappearances and the detection
of unidentified corpses in various places so that the direct blame for
these would accrue to the Government.
“They are highlighting these incidents so that the finger of
suspicion would be directly pointed at the Government and precipitate a
debate on Sri Lanka at the Confab,” he observed.
According to the PAFFREL Chief, Sri Lanka would suffer a severe blow
to its international image if the issue of human rights are introduced
into political slogans adding that it was a grave crime to hurl
accusations against the Government without substantiating them.
He said at a time when it was incumbent on all political parties to
act with responsibility in the present climate, wild allegations
directed at the Government would only earn these parties the opprobrium
of the public. |
