10 years RI for rape

COLOMBO: Colombo High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundara convicted a
person for raping a beggar woman at Maradana in 2003 and sentenced him
to 10 years rigorous imprisonment.
M.H. Mahela Kalinga was indicted on two counts for abducting a woman
at Priyadarshana Mawatha, Maradana on December 18, 2003 and raping her.
The court convicted him for the two counts. He was sentenced to five
years RI for the first count and 10 years RI for the second count
ordered to run concurrently. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000
and another 18 months RI in default.
State Counsel Asitha Wegodapola appeared for the prosecution while
Attorney Amila Vitharana appeared for the defence. |
