Save the Children deplores LTTE's misappropriation of tsunami aid
COLOMBO: Save the Children in Sri Lanka said yesterday it was
deeply concerned that its donations for Sri Lanka's tsunami affected
have been once again used for violent activities by the LTTE.
"The finding of four floating life jackets donated by Save the
Children to tsunami affected people in an LTTE boat raises further
concern about the affected population being deprived of humanitarian
assistance," it said.
Save the Children in a release said in its tsunami relief efforts, it
obliged a request from the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
(DOFAR) to distribute 400 boats along with accessories; fishing nets,
boxes, transistor radio, torch light and life saving floating jackets.
These donations were given according to a list of beneficiaries
provided by DOFAR and fishermen societies, with the intention of helping
fishing families to improve their family income so that their children
can stay with family and receive an education.
These items were distributed to affected families in Batticaloa,
Ampara, Kilinochchi and Matara districts, it said.
Save the Children deplored the misappropriation of the aid given in
partnership with the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. |
