PM inaugurates Rambukkan Oya project today

COLOMBO: Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake will inaugurate construction work on the Rambukkan Oya reservoir project in Pollebedda in the Maha Oya Divisional Secretariat Division in Ampara at 10 a.m. today.

The Rambukkan Oya project is estimated to cost Rs. 2,500 million. Of this Rs.1,175 million will be spent on Engineering works and Rs. 750 million on infrastructure facilities for people in the area.

The project undertaken with local funding and technological expertise will provide irrigation facilities to 2,325 acres of paddy land and 1,175 acres coming under minor crop cultivation.

The project which is expected to be completed in two years will directly benefit about 2,500 farmer families in the low income category whose monthly family income ranged from Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,000 at present, the Irrigation Ministry states in a press relase.

President Rajapaksa who paid special attention to this project coming under Mahinda Chinthanaya directed Irrigation Minister M.I. Anver Ismail to re-commence this project immediately, the press release added.
