CPSL reviews present situation in Sri Lanka
COLOMBO: The Central Committee of Communist Party of Sri Lanka (CPSL)
reviewed the political situation and the recent developments in the
North-East a release by the Communist Party of Sri Lanka said.
It noted with grave concern the unbridled escalation of violence in
the North-East and the abortive attempt on the life of the Defence
Secretary.
The death, displacement and destruction caused to the people -
Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims have earned the wrath of our people.
The international community is watching the situation with scorn and
concern. Revelations relating to supply of information and intelligence
to the LTTE on the part of certain elements in the security forces are
alarming.
While the LTTE continues with its belligerence and intransigence,
with threats of irrecoverable state of destruction and separatism, the
extremist forces in the South demand military confrontations and banning
of the LTTE. It is regrettable that certain sections of the media both
in the North and the South knowingly or unknowingly seek to escalate the
situation promoting extremist positions.
The communist Party reiterates its continued and unwavering stand for
a political solution, as the only way out of the crisis. The absence of
a consensus amongst the political parties has been the main stumbling
bloc to a lasting solution to the problem. The post-independent history
of our country is a history of missed or lost opportunities.
In these circumstances, the Communist Party calls upon the two major
political parties SLFP and UNP not to allow the on-going agony prolonged
but to seize the opportunity offered by the MoU and strive collectively
to work-out a political solution.
The Communist Party believes that the factors favouring a political
solution are brighter than ever and positive as never before. The
political will and determination on their part in the larger interest of
the country will pave way for a much needed consensus.
Our own experiences, the international experiences, and the very
nature of the national question warrant a sober and saner approach in
the search of a political solution.
Extremist forces both in the North and the South seek to sabotage the
government's efforts in the search of a political solution.
The frustrated LTTE's talk of "genocide" is a calculated attempt on
its part to push the issue, through an escalated confrontation for an
United Nations intervention, the consequence of which will be
disastrous.
The Communist Party of Sri Lanka acknowledges the fact that the
government required to take all possible measures in the larger interest
of national and state security.
However, it should alert itself against any possible unbridled
situation provoked by the extremist forces both in the North and the
South.
The Party takes this opportunity to warn all the political parties of
an impending strategic and economic danger, in the event of absence or
collapse of consensus on political situation.
