'National security most important'

COLOMBO: A section of the Media has published incorrect information on the arrest of Muththusamy Parameshwari, the Government wishes to clarify its position.

Muththusamy Parameshwari has been detained in connection with an arrest of a LTTE suicide bomber in Colombo. The police investigations are continuing.

Parameshwari is a journalist attached to the Sinhala weekly 'Mawbima'.

The police have clarified that the detention of Parameshwari is not connected to her media profession. She has been detained solely in the course of a terrorism related investigation.

The Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) wishes to emphasise that national security is most important and the police have a legitimate duty to detain any person, irrespective of his/her profession or social standing.

There are instances of detention of security force personnel, police officers, politicians and other professionals in connection with police investigations into criminal and terrorist activities.

The GOSL, while emphasising that no person is above law, wishes to appeal to media persons not be misled by false propaganda unleashed by interested parties.
