'National security most important'
COLOMBO: A section of the Media has published incorrect
information on the arrest of Muththusamy Parameshwari, the Government
wishes to clarify its position.
Muththusamy Parameshwari has been detained in connection with an
arrest of a LTTE suicide bomber in Colombo. The police investigations
are continuing.
Parameshwari is a journalist attached to the Sinhala weekly 'Mawbima'.
The police have clarified that the detention of Parameshwari is not
connected to her media profession. She has been detained solely in the
course of a terrorism related investigation.
The Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) wishes to emphasise that national
security is most important and the police have a legitimate duty to
detain any person, irrespective of his/her profession or social
standing.
There are instances of detention of security force personnel, police
officers, politicians and other professionals in connection with police
investigations into criminal and terrorist activities.
The GOSL, while emphasising that no person is above law, wishes to
appeal to media persons not be misled by false propaganda unleashed by
interested parties. |
