Series of programmes to celebrate Int'l Human Rights Day

COLOMBO: The Human Rights Ministry will organise a series of events islandwide to mark International Human Rights Day which falls on December 10.

The main event focussing on quality, dignity, respect, non discrimination and multi-culturalism will be held along Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7 on December 10.

The event will elevate the awareness on human rights among the public in accordance with international standards.

The rural community will also be educated on the fundamental human rights. The main event highlights the benefits of cultural diversity, religious tolerance and combating various forms of discrimination.

The programme comprises an exhibition with 15-20 stalls, website launch, photographic and literature displays on human rights, street dramas.

A documentary film on Human Rights will also be screened during this event. Three troupes will conduct street dramas from December 11-15 in 17 districts.

The first international Human Rights Day ceremony was held in 1950 at the United Nations General Assembly with the participation of all States and organisations interested in protecting human rights.
