Help President, Opposition Leader to evolve devolution proposals - UNP

COLOMBO: The United National Party yesterday called on the people to support the President and the Opposition Leader to evolve credible power sharing proposals that will form the basis for a viable negotiated settlement between the Government and LTTE.

UNP MP Gayantha Karunathilaka in a statement issued yesterday on behalf of the UNP urged the Government and the LTTE to respond positively to the Co-Chair statement of November 21, which contains proposals to recommence the peace talks.

"The UNP reiterates that the only solution to the conflict in Sri Lanka lies in a negotiated political settlement. This should accommodate the legitimate interests and aspirations of all Sri Lankan communities.

There is no doubt that the vast majority of our people including most of Tamil seek such a solution within a united Sri Lanka. Separatism is no answer and will only lead to further bloodshed and sufferings by all."
