Death sentence for murdering mother

KURUNEGALA: Provincial High Court Judge Kurunegala Tudor
Gunaratne, sentenced son and son-in-law to death for murdering their
mother and discharged the third accused (daughter-in-law) yesterday.
The first accused K. A. Susantha Sunimal (son), second accused K. A.
Jayasinghe (son-in-law) and the third accused K. A. Navaratne Menike
(daughter-in-law) were indicted by the Attorney-General with committing
the murder of K. N. Menike (mother) of Dodangaslanda, Maduragoda on July
3, 1993.
The deceased was the mother of first accused Susantha Sunimal.
The second accused was her son-in-law and third accused was Navaratne
Menike her daughter-in-law. The evidence against the third accused was
not sufficient and she was acquitted by the High Court Judge. A large
number of people were gathered around the High Court premises to hear
the verdict.
State Counsel Chamath Dileepa Pieris appeared for the State.

COLOMBO: The Ceylon Association for the Mentally Retarded (CAMR) and
its 41 affiliates will be hosting various events for about 700 mentally
retarded persons on December 02 at S.De.S. Jayasinghe Sports Grounds,
Dehiwela.
The programme is as follows: 9.00 - 10.00 a.m. - Walk from the
Kalubowila Hospital Road-Galle Road Junction to S.De S. Jayasinghe
Ground. 10 a.m. - 12 noon - Exhibition and sales of items handcrafted by
Mentally Retarded persons and 1.30 p.m. - 5.30 pm. - Performing arts
competition followed by prize distribution by Her Worship Sunethra
Ranasinghe Mayoress of Dehiwela-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council.

Intensive Care Unit of the Cancer Hospital in Maharagama is in need of A
