KURUNEGALA: The Ministry of Rural Industries and Self-Employment
Promotion is to set up 300 production villages next year investing Rs.
500 million.
The project, to be implemented over three years, has targeted both
export and local markets. Most of production villages will be set up to
produce high-demand products for the export market targeting more
foreign exchange to the country.
Setting up five cut foliage manufacturing villages in Imiyangoda,
Mamunuwa, Walpola, Mahakeliya and Homathagama in the Kurunegala
District, Minister S.B. Nawinna said that the project would develop the
district fast. Investing nearly Rs.8 million, the Ministry has
distributed 650,000 palm cane and Sendriyana plants to over 500 people
in these five villagers.
The Minister said the Ministry has educated people on planting,
processing, fertilising and protecting plants while providing financial
assistance and latest technology. Two buyers have already signed
agreements to purchase cut foliage for export to Middle East and
European countries.
The Minister said the new cut foliage processing centre will be set
up in Galagedara which would be a meeting point for suppliers and
buyers.
"We are very keen on providing Rs.75,000 to each cooperative in the
village under concessionary rates."
He said the alliance between the UNP and UPFA would propel the
country towards success.
We also explore possibilities of setting up export market
focused-villages promoting beatle, mushroom, food based products, cut
foliage and ornamental fish. Coir-based products, hand made paper
products, blacksmiths, jewellery and leather products manufacturing
units will be set up to cater the local market.
