More UNDP funds for flood-hit areas

COLOMBO: The Disaster Management and Human Rights Ministry is planning to introduce a long and mid term emergency restoration programme to reduce the mental and physical trauma of people affected by floods and landslides, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe said.

Addressing a media conference Minister Samarasinghe said that many areas and people were affected by heavy rains and landslides and there are complaints that those affected are living in pathetic conditions.

Considering the situation the Ministry has raised its voice to collect funds to provide relief of the affected people.

The UNDP has allocated funds for the affected areas. "We are also discussing with other countries and organisations to obtain funds for rescuing the affected people. We are also working together with other Ministries to provide relief assistance.

The funds we have received can be spent as emergency assistance and there are more expenses that has to be incurred to resettle people," the Minister said.
