Three horticultural villages proposed

COLOMBO: The Botanical and Zoological Gardens Ministry has decided to
set up three horticultural villages to cater to the export market in
Avissawella, Balangoda and Nuwara-Eliya.
The main objective of this project is to increase the Government's
contribution to promote the export trade. The initial investment is Rs.
100 million. Ministry Additional Secretary H.M.B.C Herath said
anthuriums will be cultivated in 73 acres in Avissawella while a 25 acre
land in Balangoda will be acquired to cultivate roses.
It will also acquire land to cultivate carnation, orchids and other
suitable flowers for export in Nuwara-Eliya. The Ministry is in the
process of acquiring lands with the assistance of the Land Reforms
Commission. The project is expected to commence next year.
