COLOMBO: The Botanical and Zoological Gardens Ministry has decided to set up three horticultural villages to cater to the export market in Avissawella, Balangoda and Nuwara-Eliya.

The main objective of this project is to increase the Government's contribution to promote the export trade. The initial investment is Rs. 100 million. Ministry Additional Secretary H.M.B.C Herath said anthuriums will be cultivated in 73 acres in Avissawella while a 25 acre land in Balangoda will be acquired to cultivate roses.

It will also acquire land to cultivate carnation, orchids and other suitable flowers for export in Nuwara-Eliya. The Ministry is in the process of acquiring lands with the assistance of the Land Reforms Commission. The project is expected to commence next year.
