Public grasp of the law strengthens rule of law

COLOMBO: President Mahinda Rajapaksa observed that bringing the people closer to the law, was the best way of strengthening the 'Rule of Law', as the process helped the people to respect and understand how the law is administered.

President Rajapaksa made this observation addressing the inauguration of the National Law Week, themed "Facilitating Access to Justice" at the BMICH.

The President made his address via satellite. The event was organised by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.

The President said that due to prevailing circumstances, he was unable to address the event in person, although he himself was a member of the legal profession.

The cause therein was very close to his heart.

"I am glad that the activities during this week are intended to promote greater understanding of the law, our legal system and the legal profession, within our community. Taking the law to the people, is a matter of great importance today, because it is a key aspect in strengthening democracy in our country, and therefore, a concept that is timely and necessary," he said.

The President was of the view that those of the legal profession working closely with the law and its enforcement, were undoubtedly aware of the importance of imparting a proper understanding of the law and its accessibility.

This knowledge could give the people the confidence of protecting their interest through the law. "It will also empower the people with a true knowledge of their rights, duties and privileges under the law," he added.

President Rajapaksa said that women today are distanced and even oppressed by the law, a situation that had to be changed, so that they would be strengthened and empowered by the law.

The President lauded the 'Human Rights Awareness' programme in the 'National Law Week', intended for members of the Armed Forces, the Police, the Prisons and the University students, at a time when human rights are becoming increasingly important in many areas of governance, political and social activities.

"The efforts of the organisers will help open a new chapter in increasing awareness of the law among our people. May this be the beginning of many more useful activities to bring the people closer to the law, and to help them in obtaining easy access to the law," the President added.
