Pakistan High Commission undertakes social welfare projects
COLOMBO: The Pakistan High Commission during the period of 2005-2006
has completed the following social welfare projects in Sri Lanka.
The High Commission has fully funded the setting up of a modern and
fully equipped Intensive Care Unit in the Zia Hospital, Akurana at a
total cost of SL Rs. 15 million. The project included the construction
of the building and provision of the equipment.
It has established three big and four small computer centres in Sri
Lanka at a total cost of SL Rs. six million. The biggest computer centre
was established in Colombo, as a tri-lateral project between the High
Commission, the Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka and the Young
Muslim Men's Association (YMMA).
Other major centres have been established in Kandy and Akurana.
Computers have been provided for setting a few smaller computer centres
in Kandy and Kalmunai areas.
The High Commission has provided scholarships to 20 deserving
students at SL Rs. 2,000 for the whole year. The students were selected
based on their academic performance and socio-economic situation.
It has undertaken to provide books on Pakistan to the Bandaranaike
Centre for International Studies, The University of Colombo, the South
Eastern University in Ampara, and the Diplomatic Training Institute in
Colombo and has translated the book Gandhar Art in Pakistan written by
Prof. Emeritus Ahmad Hassan Dani, to Sinhalese language for
distributions locally. Translation into Sinhala by Prof. J. G.
