Typical congested roads in Colombo
|
TRAFFIC: From Monday it is a pleasure to drive in to Colombo or walk
the streets of Colombo. No hassle of parked vehicles on Side walks when
walking.
No hassle to avoid reversing vehicles on to oncoming traffic or the
usual driver of Sri Lanka who drives on the right if he wants to turn
left or drives on the left if he wants to turn right.
No necessity to keep a sharp eye on the vehicle in front for sudden
stops on the sight of a vacant parking place. The roads in Colombo are
too wide now.
As usual drivers of this country, especially the drivers of three
wheelers, do not know what road markings are, set aside lane markings.
We boast of a high literacy but our standard of education can be seen
observing the drivers of the country. Idle City Traffic Police now
instill discipline on drivers on use of Lanes, Stop signs, Yellow box,
Pedestrian crossings.
Educate Police Officers not to signal traffic to proceed when colour
light is read or be ahead of two double lines which say do not move
beyond this line at a colour light
Now the Police, CMC, UDA, RDA provide car parks at convenient
locations to park and walk or park and ride.
The car parks currently provided are of very bad condition. A fee too
is being charged. Immediately proceed to pave the car parks. Rains are
due soon and none will want to park in a muddy field provided by CMC,
UDA, RDA.
Have parking attendants to help park and get out of park. Proper
lighting if the parks are to be used after sunset.
Minister of Transport or the Private Sector can provide a shuttle
service from the car park to selected places. This is already being done
for car parks of Central Bank, HNB which are located away from their own
building.
Provide this facility to the general owner driven private cars or
have a three wheeler available to give the owner drivers a ride to his
destination.
Next action should be to get rid of payment hawkers on pavements. If
this is continued Colombo will go back to the glory it was when Colombo
was managed by Gentlemen and Gentlewomen. Neat, Clean and respected.
Hats off to the Government in making this decision under the guise of
Security and trust pressure from uncultured media, which highlight the
negatives of this scheme, not the positive, will not make the wise,
bold, intelligent decision taken reversed as it usually happens in this
country.
We are 20 years behind countries of the region by reversing
intelligent decisions in favour of uncultured confusion or continue to
be a nation in confusion.
