Faster system for brand new vehicle registration

COLOMBO: The Motor Traffic Department will introduce a speedier system for the registration of brand new vehicles from August 1.

Motor Traffic Commissioner B. Wijayaratne told the Daily News that the new system was aimed at expediting the present time-consuming registration process for brand new vehicles.

"Under the present system, all work involved with the registration of imported vehicles like data collection, processing and scrutiny are performed by the Department. This often prolongs the registration process," he said.

Wijayaratne said the Department will cut the present procedure short from August 1 by permitting companies importing and selling brand new vehicles to compile the data required for registration. "We will provide these companies with the software required for compiling data. Then the companies will be able to record data regarding their vehicles themselves and submit them to the Department".

However, he emphasised that the Department will ensure that the new procedure is not misused, by subjecting the data submitted by the companies to strict scrutiny.
