Coaching camp in diving
DIVING: A coaching camp in diving for beginners commenced recently
initiated by the Sugathadasa Stadium Sports Development Project. This
one month coaching camp initiated by Gamini Nethicumara, Chairman of the
Sugathadasa Stadium Sports Control Authority aims to attract new blood
into the aquatic sport of diving and is being conducted at the
Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium Swimming Pool Complex.
The request to conduct a coaching camp for diving was made by the
Interim Committee of the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) headed
by senior DIG Sirisena Herath.
"We are extremely happy to extend our support for this programme by
providing experienced resource personnel. Diving is a difficult sport
and therefore providing training of this nature is extremely important
for identification of talent within the country" said Jehan Unantenne,
the Diving Director of the SLASU.
Approximately 50 participants have been nominated by schools from
various parts of the island for this coaching camp. During the camp they
will be trained on the basics of diving and those identified with an
aptitude for diving will be recommended for further training.
The course is conducted by experienced diving coaches Mahinda
Liyanage and Akhry Ameer. They are assisted by senior divers and members
from the diving sub-committee of the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union.
The diving technical committee comprises Sumit Dharmadasa, Harini
Jayasekera, Nishan Ranasinghe, Sasanka Perera, Esiri Kankanige, Lochana
Kottehewa, Dilesh Wellighton, Ulfath Uwais.
