Old Zahirians rout Jawatte Lions
RUGBY: In a game marred by unruly incidents and spectator violence,
Old Zahirians Sports Club defeated Jawatte Lions Sports Club by a
massive 67 points to 10 points in their Caltex Inter-Club 'A' Division
League Rugby Tournament match played at the University Grounds, Thurstan
Road, yesterday.
The winners collected their points from six goals and five tries
having led 33 nil at half-time while Jawatte Lions SC managed to score
only two unconverted tries.
However Old Zahirians SC's performances on the field were
overshadowed by the ugly incidents that occurred just a couple of
minutes away from the final whistle.
A minor incident on the field between two rival players which could
have settled by the referee's intervention, soon spread into the
respective camps where the substitutes also got involved along with the
spectators.
The two teams then figured in a free for all for more than five
minutes and the referee Rankothge in consultation with the Match
Commissioner Senarath Alwis and his assistants D. Nimal and Kelum Sujith
awarded the game to Old Zahirians Sports Club.
Former Zahira College wing three-quarter N.I. Subaideen was easily
the most outstanding player for the Old Zahirians SC running down as
many as four tries. He was supported by Umesh Eranga, Shakir Salley, M.
Irshad and T.R. Manan with one try each. Ramshi Cuncheer was successful
in converting six tries.
Roshan Sagayam and Asela Mosses scored a try each for Jawatte Lions
Sports Club who are making their debut this year in 'A' Division Rugby.
