New Mayor of Colombo

COLOMBO: Ending all speculations as to what would befall the Independent Group III which won the majority of seats at the recently concluded Colombo Municipal Election, Mohommed U. Imtiyaz was sworn in as the new Mayor of Colombo yesterday evening at the Premadasa Centre, Colombo.

Imtiyasz took his oath before Sirisena Cooray, a former UNP Minister and one time Mayor of Colombo.

The Independent Group III contested with Spectacle as the symbol of the group had the backing of the UNP candidates whose nomination list was rejected by the Returning Officer on the Nominations Day on technical grounds.

The CMC officials were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
