Vavuniya poll postponed

COLOMBO : Vavuniya District Returning officer in consultation with the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake yesterday decided to postpone the elections for the Vavuniya Urban Council and the Vavuniya South Pradeshiya Sabha.

"This decision was reached considering security concerns and the tensions prevailing in the district," an Elections Secretariat spokesperson said adding that the election for the two bodies was fixed for September 30 along with the rest of the 45 North-East local bodies.

The election in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts will be held as scheduled on Saturday. Eastern province District returning officers met the Polls Chief yesterday to discuss preparations for the poll.
