Kingswood boxers excel

BOXING: Kingswood College boxers put up a fine show wining six events
in all at the Kandy YMCA's centenary celebrations boxing championship
organised by the Central Province Boxing Association on behalf of the
Kandy Young Men's Christian Association and worked off at the YMCA
gymnasium in Kandy recently.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Central Range), Nimal Mediwake
was the chief guest with Lakshaman Fernando (President YMCA), S. A.
Wijewickrema (Co-ordinating Secretary YMCA), Pastor Donald Fernando and
David Edirisinghe as the guests of honour.
There was a delay in releasing the results to the media and the Co-ordinating
Secretary of the YMCA S. A. Wijewickrema explained that the results
sheets were taken away by an official and they were returned seven days
later.
D. R. Wijeratne who boxed in the Seniors Under 54 kg. category for
Vidyartha College and put up an excellent show against Y. G. S. T.
Wickremasinghe of Kandy YMCA was adjudged the 'Best Boxer'. I. L.
Sampath of Kandy YMCA who put up a plucky display against K. G. L. C.
Dharmadasa of Kingswood Club and losing narrowly was adjudged the 'Best
Loser'.
Kingswoodians stole the show with the school team winning three
events while another three was won by Kingswood Boxing Club in the
senior category. Mahanama College, Kandy was not far behind with the
school team winning three events while the club won two events.
Vidyartha College came close with four wins. The meet was concluded on a
highly successful note and the distribution of awards will take place
next month at a grand ceremony to be held. |
