COLOMBO: UNP MP Hemakumara Nanayakkara yesterday pledged to extend
his party's fullest support to the Government to defeat terrorism and
bring peace.
Speaking in Parliament, Nanayakkara condemned the LTTE's use of a
pregnant suicide bomber to target the Army Commander, questioning as to
why women's NGOs and other NGOs were silent on this heinous act. He said
this act of the LTTE was a crime against the Tamil people. The Tigers do
not believe in peace, he added.
Referring to the protest held earlier in the House by the TNA, where
they held a banner that read 'stop state terrorism', Nanayakkara asked
as to why they were silent on LTTE terrorism. It was pathetic that the
TNA which came to Parliament with the Tamil people's blessing was now
dancing to the LTTE's tune out of fear for their lives.
The MP called for enhanced security for Parliament and other vital
institutions in view of the LTTE's threats.
National Security should not be compromised, he said.
"We will give all possible support to the Government to bring peace,"
he remarked.
He recalled that by signing the Ceasefire Agreement, the UNP
Government led by then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe genuinely
wished to achieve peace in the country.
"The UNP always strove to achieve peace," he said. |
