HOCKEY: Kingswood College put up a fine display to trounce
Trinity College by five goals to nil to become champions at the Kandy
Schools Under-17 Boys Hockey Championship organised by the Kandy
District Schools Hockey Association at the finals played at the
University Grounds, Peradeniya on Monday. At the breather the
Kignswoodians led 2-0.
Kingswood scored their goals through centre forward M.M. Munaweera
(2), centre half N.R. Obeysiri (2) and left extreme Y.M. Fernando (1).
O.G. Dharmaratne and N. Paraneetharan umpired. Dharmaraja College
clinched the third place when they beat Sri Rahula College, Katugastota
3-0. At half-time Rajans led 1-0.
M.P. Attanayake, S.S.P. Wijesundera and Y.D. Madugalle scored a goal
each for the Rajans. Sumith Dissanayake and M. Senthil Kumara umpired.
In the semi-finals Kingswood College beat Sri Rahula College 5-0
after leading 2-0 at the Lemons. Trinity College edged out Dharmaraja
College 2-1 on penalty strokes.
In the group matches Kingswood College faced stiff opposition from
Vidyartha College before overcoming them 1-0. Sri Rahula College
surprised St. Sylvester's College with a 3-0 win. Trinity beat Sri
Rahula College 1-0. Dharmaraja College beat Vidyartha College 1-0,
Trinity College beat St. St. Sylvester's College 1-0 and Kingswood
College once again had to under go a tough time against Dharmaraja
College before winning 1-0 in what could be termed as the best match of
the tournament. But the Kingswoodians had easy passages in the
semi-final and final to clinch the championship title honours. |
