Charity match for Charles Wijewardena
RUGBY: Late Charles Wijewardena was one of the great place-kickers
that Sri Lanka rugby football fans have ever seen. Apart from being a
brilliant place-kicker, where he was identified as "Mr. Reliable", "King
Charles", etc., he was one of the neat and very disciplined players to
grace the rugby arena in Sri Lanka.
Charles Wijewardena was a very simple, unassuming personality who
died under tragic circumstances in Jaffna, whilst performing his duties.
Many who knew Charles wonder as to why a simple, humble human being like
Charles Wijewardena had to die under such a brutal condition.
Police Sports Club, with the assistance of Air Force, CR & FC and
Kandy Sports Club, has planned a Charity Match to be played on the 20th
of May at Nittawala, in order to honour late Wijewardena and also to
help the Wijewardena family.
Charles Wijewardena during his playing days had the unique
achievement of captaining two Services teams, that is, Air Force and
Police. In the 1971 during the insurrection, since the Air Force did not
take part in the Clifford Cup Tournament, Wijewardena represented the CR
& FC, where he helped CR & FC to win the Championship.
Since Wijewardena hails from Kandy, Kandy Sports Club agreed to host
this match and to help this worthy cause. We hope all rugby loving
public will assemble at Nittawala on May 20 to contribute to a very
worthy cause and for an officer and a gentleman par excellence.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will always
remember Charles.
