Bribery case against former CEB employee

COLOMBO: A bribery case has been filed against former Supply Assistant of the Ratnapura Branch, Lanka Electricity Board W.M. Sumanasekara for amassing money and property worth over Rs seven million.

According to the case filed before the Colombo High Court by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption, Sumanasekara has amassed the said money and property within two and half years and it cannot be garnered from his known source of income.

According to the case between March 21, 1997 and December 31, 1999, Sumanasekara has deposited the funds in several banks and spent as cost of living and other expenses a sum of Rs 5.2 million. He also has spent Rs 1.9 million on property including a house from the Millennium City Housing Complex.

According to Section 23, A(1) of the Bribery Act the Bribery Commission considers the amassed money and property that cannot be acquired from the known sources of income as the property amassed from bribery.

The case includes 17 productions and four witnesses.
