ALTHOUGH Sri
Lanka has enjoyed universal adult franchise for over 70 years, and
although Sri Lanka is in its 59th year of Independence, the lot of
women has hardly been enviable.
Today, however,
women have far more opportunities to explore their potential than
those of a generation ago.
Indeed women
constitute the vast majority of workers in two sectors that
contribute the greatest slice to the national economy, the garment
industry and migrant labour, especially in the Middle East.
All this is in
addition to handling the work associated traditionally with
motherhood. One question needs to be asked: "Are we appreciative
enough?"
Sri Lankan
migrant workers' problems should be addressed and handled with
care in an effective manner. Migrant workers should be given a
'Red Carpet welcome' on their arrival to the Motherland.
