Old Anandians to fete Army Commander
Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka is to be
feted by his second Alma Mater, Colombo Ananda College, tomorrow 26th
Thursday, as the fourth Army Commander the school has ever produced,
during a special felicitation ceremony, organised by the Old Boys
Association of Ananda College.
Lt. General Fonseka joined Ananda College to proceed with his higher
studies (1966-1969) after his primary education at Ambalangoda
Dharmashoka College was over in 1965.
The felicitation at Ananda College precedes religious observances and
offer of floral tributes to the school's monument for war heroes. The
Cadet platoon at the college afterwards presents a Guard of Honour to
their visiting old boy of the school who has now reached the highest
mantle of the military career.
The ceremony, to be attended by a large gathering of old Anandians of
the Armed Forces, Police and his senior teachers, is to present a
special plaque to Commander Fonseka on this occasion, as a token of
recognition of his services to his school and the country. Principal
B.A. Abeyrathne in association with the Ananda Old Boys Association has
organised the felicitation.
As a keen and enthusiastic sportsman cum student, he excelled in
swimming competitions during his days at Ananda College, he captained
the school's swimming team and represented the College at the 2-Mile
Swimming Contest of the National Swimming Association during 1968-1969.
He also shone as Captain of the Water Polo Team during his stay at
Ananda College.
He was both the Senior Cadet Sergeant and a Senior Prefect at school
while actively taking part in athletics - high jump event and many other
sports activities. |
